The Latest Today – 8/16 Bytes

Quick update:
HALF DAYS: snapper blues with a showing of just a few nice macks early on. Later the macks gave way to predominant blues with alot of releases on the Spanish due to size. Albies continue to pop in pods and honestly , you wanted to dive in and grab one as they were putting their noses in the air on casting and trolling. Lots of hurt feelings as we say in our business on trying to load up on that. Luck had alot to do with an albie today.

ALL DAYS: macks, some moons, albies. There is no short run on this sorry. As I warned earlier that particular group of fish has moved out of half day range! There have been a few bailers on the dock as well but that is a different animal as well so if you are trying to schedule all day best to call us directly!

You will notice I did not site out 3/4 trip as that bite is much the same as half day right now.
**We are watching the tropics. If we think anything will start to roll, we will post it but for now, man the ocean has been great so don’t miss it!

We are open Friday pm slot into the weekend. It is due to be pretty overall and if you don’t like the chance of rain then don’t book as it is summer and we see that sometimes!

thank you to those aboard right now as I have bee on the big roll!

Open Thurs & Fri Pm slot

Beautiful weather lately has us out and about for the bite. We are all on true half day territory and taco dinners were the easiest fare today! We did manage a few pulls late but they were hard to come by on that score. You could get your feelings hurt! I have had stellar crews who have hit their dinner first when possible then jaunted off. Some days it works and some days it is true fishing!

Good fishing today so thank you to my own crew who was on the dock ready to roll! Macks and albies in sunshine and some showers kept us hopping! This is a bit of a run and know that if this particular bunch of fish moves-you will need a 3/4 to reach them or an all day. You are notified!

If you are schedule with a half day and we are not booked for the pm and you want to stay we would be glad to run the extended 3/4 option time permitting! If you are booked pm slot and want to extend we can do that once aboard.
Beyond that particular area, It would put you in new territory for half days which is about the same we had last year honestly.
For now, we are on it!

On The Hook & In /Out of the boat

The pretty weather has been great for beach goers and fishing crews. Typical summer showers that breeze through have been an afterthought as we placed our gear in and watched fishing settle in.

Small blues still work the inlet areas on certain tides giving plenty for tacos and quick fish bites for the plate.

Warmer waters have shown us that still a stray ribbon has meandered.I have to say I loved her reaction straight out of a horror movie. I pulled the fish up over the washboards and turned her way with it on the line. That Ribbonfish’s teeth were Clacking.I asked her if she knew what she had just caught; how far do you think she sank into her seat cushions? Love my job!
Ribbons: Numbers from weeks ago gave way to bigger bites on the move.
I was fortunate to have an online personality who won many hearts with the “drop the blanket disappear from your pet” challenge. I think she hit the wall…no really…as she was running to hide…100k…ouch lol

She was my cookie monster and never let it be said she didn’t have a great personality, good sense of humor. So keep that in mind!

Albies, moonfish, and macks have made the pick this week. An occasional keeper king mack as well as many throw back kings mixed with the spanish have been a bonus!

The larger game fish have been on and off but when on; they have put my spinners in a tail spin! Cast them in, hook them up.

Does it always work like that? Heck no! Which is why I always emphasized that if you hit the red lottery you should enjoy it. They can be on for days then ghost every crew out there lol. My junior anglers and “guys who fish all the time” really got the show.

I KNOW it is alot of eye candy so don’t lose sight that all the photos are from trips and trips and trips and…! There is no list! Get out, enjoy it, fish it, no notions, and those are my crews.
I have more coming up. Today /Friday was good catch of some spanish, maybe king, shot on drum, one or two bailer dolphin extended trip ! Some species could go out of half day range if they continue to move. Cross your fingers !

If you want to go Saturday then give us a call at 252 423 0039 cell/boat Cpt Will. Want to hit it while it is good!

The Pendulum Swings

We were put to work as blues began to show up in the bait and my anglers were ready! Let me tell you the great thing about any younger angler; they are interested in EVERY fish they catch.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
We had fished the blues, the bottom fish (trout, croaker etc) and onto the run that has been the marathon the last few days.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
POWER NAPS ARE AWESOME and have NO AGE LIMIT!!!!
Love the energy and love the challenge to show them what may be out there as it changes by the hour.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I think they are stronger than some adults some times! I sleep VERY well after they put me through the paces.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
As the week progressed we got back on the Drum and could not have been happier at some of the hook ups we had. They move miles in a day, they are up and down and if lucky; you get the chance for the bow overs.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

More species moved in here this week ( some release- some keepers) and we still have great photos coming up! There has been some distance covered and there is a chance things may move beyond half day range. Cross the fingers folks; ya’ll earned it this year I believe!

We have Friday pm trip open. Into weekend just call us directly at 252 423 0039 cell Cpt Will

Fish This, Fish That, Fish Wish

Round two! If you had friends here last week know that some parts of our island saw 20 inches, 12 inches, even 16 inches of rain , rain, rain! Did we fish? Well, cancelled some due to wind (not rain) and fished the rest! We were pouting that we had to leave the ribbons behind as conditions have changed on half days and shoved that species down.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Doesn’t mean they won’t pop back up. For now, we fish , switch, fish switch, and then do our best to hook it.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I had regulars who poncho’d up, came on back, and we did the troll and the bottom in one shot! My boys are great at hooking them and taking a page to be in the moment. Watching them would blow the stereotype of always being “plugged in” to shame!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
You can’t make it up. Stuck in the cottage? Nope. Saving sunshine for the beach? Yep.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Do fish know it is raining? Most of the time nope. We had a few breaks towards week’s end which finally lent to some easier work for fish coming over the boards.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Our phone has been on fire every time the sunshine hits the beach lol. If we have missed you at the last minute we know you had a great time no matter where you were. As the seas laid down, the bait organized we saw another switch; the Drum switch got flipped.

Last few days have been a derby but in quieter moments, it has been great to just cast and breathe. Although they don’t always show (some days you see them some days not), it has been great when it works! Remember: release only as they are too BIG to keep…i know…calm down it is the law! lol

The Highs/Low (pressure) & Then Some

If you have not read the prior report please do so! We have fished it all the last two weeks and it is good information on fish cleaning, product, and what hits the plate. I apologize to those that have been waiting on some photos so here is the first round! Water temps originally warmer than our normal temperature curve on the short trip run end.

We saw shark, ribbon, few blues in the mix. Just a few false albies on the long run (all day trip)this past week showed us it was all on the move again.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have had great groups who were very gracious no matter what the bite so do not think that I didn’t notice; I did. If you had not heard we had quite the High pressure system, then Low pressure system, then sunshine, then showers…NATURALLY by Wednesday my phone was on fire as folks were ready to go, get out, fish it, be with family and friends in a different environment. That is what we do!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

New crews were able to see the coast and sound, the aquarium on the bottom, the ocean when solid, and the dolphin show (mammal). Ribbons were on the plate and in the box. A few black tip and sharpnose also milled the food chain.

New hook ups, new views, sunny & cloudy the fleet was working.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As the weeks progressed and a new system moved in we all shifted techniques with the species on the hunt and went from bottom to troll and back again.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
and my regulars know we have alot of tackle we can put in…and that is what we did.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Blues that have hidden did start to regroup (lots more Spanish again this year than blues overall) and put a fleet back on troll..then bottom…lol I have more coming up as you can tell so keep hooked up here and on our social for the next round. If you are here , settle in, unwind, and relax because you are not in an office, laundry room, school, etc. Your toes can be in the sand and on the boat! Mother Nature is the boss and fishing is fishing but our crews bring the picnic basket and go!

To my regulars who were right on spot; you had your own reality show this week! lol. What a ride! The weather was daunting at times but stacking three trips in a day is no issue for us if it lays down, groups up, and turns on. thank you for the call list as it was appreciated.
If you have interest in a species not pictured, best to call and get the latest. It may not have been caught in a while or may be on a longer trip than you are trying to plan! Be informed! PS boys your photos are in the next report to be published.

Purses , Shoes & A bag of Bones? Your PSA

YOUR PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
I have to say that after having a conversation with another captain during a break in the morning (ok Sarah and I were waiting for the next groups), it got us to thinking! We take alot of fun families. Occasionally, some of the guys will mention the Outlet Malls, shops, etc. The way we tallied it was that a purse/bag “on sale” could be balanced with a trip with us! Shoes involved? Extend the trip! Wait, spa time too???? Lunch out?! Winner Winner Chicken dinner! I see an All Day Trip! Okay so we had fun with that (there is a slight logic). That is just the way my mind works as I KNOW those brands ;)

We also became aware of some things as well. We are accustomed to cleaning our own dinner. Many clients are using services elsewhere as well as the marina. This is a plate of cleaned ribbonfish with the skin removed. Nope. no bones. If grilling you can leave the skin on but yep, it comes off in strips. The reason this came up is that a visitor caught us chatting up on the docks and mentioned a fish he tried was too bony for his liking. It happened to be what we considered a desirable fish also seen restaurant side.
20180707_121440

I would say this; if we are recommending the fish it is because we consider it a good fish to eat! We were both a bit surprised on the news that bones were left in. For us, heading and gutting would be the case for that on small bottom fish which you treat like pan trout. I have eaten croaker, trout, sea mullet this way just like camping out on a river.

If you get fish filleted that are bony, most of the time you can rectify it. For triggers they have a big rib cage you can take a knife up against and remove the meat or roast/poach the fillets and the meat falls off any bone. Filleted ribbonfish american style is one long piece for each side no bone. You can remove the skin by taking a sharp knife between the meat and skin. I have friends that remove bones with chop sticks when the fish is not filleted. In that style the fish is cut into chunks starting at the neck. They are more adept than I and they actually sent me a video on that which I will post later to our social accounts.

This is visitor feedback we appreciate and had I just wanted to put some good information out there so you we are on the same page! I would hate to think we have all been recommending fish seen in the restaurants, on our plates, in the markets only to find out prep may have soured the experience for anyone! We would not know unless we are being told. Now it is out there.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My angler pics are coming up! I am landside trying to put it up here. This was a LONG week for everyone trying to fish, work around no wind but a huge volume of water moving out of the sound due to the Low Pressure that was here. Sunshine last two days helped alot and fishing got better throughout the day yesterday to approach more normalcy oceanside and soundside.

Hang on as it is coming up!
Thank you to those that were with us as it all got shook!

Weekend Woes? You just GOT here lol

I know right? You just got here, you drove into the rain showers, and you were thinking; “Omg…is this my vacation???” You are supposed to see blue skies, breezes, normal summer showers…it is the beach.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
There are ALOT worse places to be than hanging out at the cottage, grilling with the family, hitting the sand, bocci , corn hole, fishing…the list is large! I hate to show my age but some of us vacationed here with no TV. no cable, no AC, no phone…and we had a blast. Swim, bonfires prior to the permit system, ghost crabs, fishing, radio on the beach towel..ikr? The kids are screaming ” how did you MAKE it??!!!”
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As for us, we are off today and tomorrow!
FullSizeRender 340
I had a chance to catch up with friends at the Secotan market (love sneaking over there when I get blown out-read wind not rain). I grabbed my rain gear and bought just enough to go with the coffee and create some dinner this week before we go back on shift. This is the shake up that we have and all that was old will be NEW again. Inside/Outside it all goes back to square one as we regroup and head out. As we hit it, we will let you know!
FullSizeRender 342

Until then chill, get settled, don’t stress, and you are on vacation so leave the pressure at the foot of the bridge.

Thanks to those aboard as we have made some great friends and look forward to seeing you all again! Photos will be coming up for the trips already sailed.
