So…then the chill is gone?

Sure! If your toes are in the sand right now it is. Sunny skies, breezes, quite a few folks looking around; it is Easter approaching in full bloom. We have waited through an ugly March to put our shorts on, polish the boats, and shore up our rigs. Ah memories….great times…
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Fishing wise it is JUST as we thought for now. When Hatteras and below get the sound water pushing out, there are just a few blues, occasional puppy drum in the mix. Nearshore up this beach is blow toads and small shark. It is still cold in the thermal layer but every time we get a white Southwester’ our fingers are crossed it pushed the heat just a bit closer. That is what it takes and whether we wreck fish or troll and stroll, we will be out there.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have been on the road a bit and will be again tomorrow as I have placed alot of irons in the fire. If you are my clients and definitely know when you want to go fishing then I would urge you to pay close attention shortly. Get on the books. I have some who fly in and out based on schedule and that is fine but for those in the cottages; once you know then place it on the calendar.
don’t be sad…it is never how you think…
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just relax and know Will and I always try our best to see how we can show you a good time. Being in nature is like that…It can be anything and it MAY even change your mind!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I appreciate all who left a call back as Apple does put you in driving mode! Just hang in there and don’t be shy as most of our town driving you can do in a blink of an eye! Thank you to all who are cheering us on for the upcoming year. We work hard to meet that!

Heads Up-Bookings are Moving

Calls are beginning, bookings are being taken and the calendar has started. I already have some mornings in a row that are now unavailable so if you know when you are coming and want to go, best to be on the books. If you see photos on here from your family trip in my blog, it is time to download them for your personal memories now. We will be updating and erasing some of the slate!

I have inquiries for prices so give us a call at our home! I apologize to the nice folks who called me prior to having to leave this morning as they never got a quote on the six hour trip ….sigh. I am dusting the cobwebs!

We run half days , 3/4 trips which are six hours, and all day trips. We fish miles off the beach as well as all the way to the sound depending on time of year, weather, and where the fish are moving. Mother nature rules!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Changes have come for us and it is all good! We have a week of some SW winds next week and we all know Blues, spanish, and cobia move into place in the late push of May on this end! We drift, bottom fish, troll, cast etc. All depends on what may be running, conditions, and how much time we have

I am looking forward to everything coming our way and as always so appreciate the customers we have been in touch with. Thank you to those on the books and to those thinking; just call and the info is free! If you get our voicemail, just leave a message and we will call you right back!

The Fins Ahead-”Temperatura” is everything!

Nearshore waters (think a few miles off all the way back to the sounds and estuaries) are not a highway for early travelers! Sure there are an occasional drum seen beachside and a bite here and there. As we get the right winds, fish will attempt to move into place. The real deal comes when our waters hit the higher temps and stabilize a bit. That is usually a wait and see on the moment thing. That is why we are on call as a business until we fill up (which we do).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Blues are the first to nip it as the dogfish push northward. We begin to see those Spanish as well but not all of those come from the oceanside. Some days it is a sprint and some days it is a marathon! I have great Spring groups who want the toes in the sand and the sun on their backs. Windbreakers? Who cares! You are out of town and somewhere else!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
A whisper or two across the washboards can’t hurt. It is about going out, having a good time, and letting nature rule. Can you see this in your commute? Can you see it live in your office? Welcome to ours.

Part of the beauty is that being on the banks we see one species and switch..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Be the angler who adjusts to rain or shine (they were warriors!Adults would have cried but they have the inner youth. Embrace it on vacay)
and switch as the waters warm and the fish move! Larger fare do move through throughout the summer. There is no secret place as they migrate. If you have not seen the derby as you try to crunch that size fish into a time slot then welcome to the show.

Big fish move miles in a day and picking a direction can be a coin toss. Casts are made, captains jostle for positions and feelings are hurt lol. The next day you reset and do it allll overrrr againnnn.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Cobias, drum, and even the occasional exotic move as the heat sets in the summer thermal layers.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Sometimes a face only a mother can love but on light tackle a whole different approach to be sure.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
We respect it all. We can release, keep, choose just enough for dinner, take photos for the record and put it back for another day.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
That is part of the joy as every day is different. Just remember there are some fish that are too big to keep (yes you read that correctly ) and as we acquaint you with the slots; we can show you how to enjoy each part of the trip. It is always fishing. Some days you get them and some days they show you why they have a brain!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
No matter what, bring your friends, your family, just the girls, just the guys; just take advantage of being here.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I have had man’s & woman’s best friend aboard but you must speak with us prior. You do not want to stress him/her out as they are part of the family as well!
We do our best to meet a fish you may be looking for so get with us early to know what runs when, what the chances may be and know it is still a mighty big river with alot of room to hide!

We are looking forward to it this year. I am booking so best to call us on cell at 252 423 0039 cell/capt. Will to set your slot. We also have the same telemarketers you have so if your phone is blocked please leave a message! Apple also turns it off while driving and honestly with our traffic set up, I leave it that way so just give us five min. to get back to you.
1/2 DAYS, 3/4 DAYS, ALL DAY TRIPS, 3RD TRIP ONCE SLOTS ARE FULL

currently: the weather was great and today is like Washington state…rainy but dude, it is the beach!

Our Own Jerry Garcia…Retires. Ciao Whalebone tackle

In our world he is a rock star.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There are very few fishermen who have not sat on the porch, chewed the fat by the counter, told a bold face fishing lie as to where they were, what they caught , and how many. Welcome to Whalebone Tackle! I cannot tell you how many times we all talk about retiring. Maybe the clients were tough, the opinions rough, or the day not what we wanted it to be. Darn if he didn’t beat Will and me to retirement!

This is where I rigged up, ordered, had a custom rod made, had my rods repaired, had my reels repaired or thrown across the counter as junk. Take your pick. “Do you need something or do you need to just go???” and since we were all friends, it was the start of a conversation.

It was an era of cut off shorts, ragged jeans, everyone broke, flannel shirts, and young children in tow.Like many kids, Charles grew up going in and out, having a free pop(because Bill was the best), and telling Billy about the drum that drug him across the bow on his duff because he was so light at the time! We later all morphed into parents, grandparents, owners, workers, and fishermen hailing from many ports. Billy was a constant…A little W.C. Fields and a little Jerry Garcia all rolled into one.

The surf teams that that rolled into town yearly made their stop for mullet there as did the locals. If you needed the jigs, Billy had em’ with the fresh bait to boot. He was on top of the game, the info, the how and where and the scales stood on stand by. If you were some of those teams and couldn’t be here today, know it was standing room only as we put our boots to the ground and showed up in force. Many a beer was raised to cheer on a person who stood as a bit of a driftwood compass in our day to day.

I wanted my speech to be here as to reach those who could not come but know a good time was had by all! The stories were ongoing as I left. I wanted to thank Billy for the times he put our bill on hold when we didn’t have the money.I wanted to thank him for the times he said “just try this, if it doesn’t work, just bring it back.” When we did, we made sure to do our business there as that is what small businesses try to do for one another.

There is a new owner coming into his spot who is already remodeling. The place will be undergoing a few changes but for now, we “cheers” our very own Jerry Garcia.

Welcome Hatteras Flyway

“That which shall not be named” is in the process of being named! I saw in print that the catwalk on the old bridge may retain Bonner and the new span Basnight but we shall see. In the meantime, residents, on lookers, two wheels, four legs, all showed up for the walk across the new bridge spanning Oregon Inlet. Yep, on the radio it will always be “the bridge” or the “Oregon Inlet Bridge” versus, new inlet, new bridge manns harbor, old manns harbor…you get the picture. It was wind chill in the 30′s, NE 22plus, and we all showed just to see the view you cannot get when you are driving 55mph.

The birds were below us and I put my ipod on and just cruised.Surprisingly easy considering the conditions. I will point out there was alot of help to make this happen and between Park, management, ems etc-they should also be handed a big atta boy. There was even a shuttle there to cross if that was the only way you could walk one way. Just no motorized vehicles.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
The bridge is set to open up this month and the profiles appeared like a DNA helix; the old and the new side by side.It was hard not to notice that there were plenty of canines in tow. Whether sage,
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
or budied up; they kept their humans going!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had a chance to see the current from above, the building of shoals, where we push through now, and where we can in the future.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I must admit, the old span sits in the water like a Barber’s comb dividing the rush of the ocean.I know each corner of the pilings, each cast I made, each piece I drifted as well as the sunrise that shone through those spans in the morning. That will always be the imprint. It is that version that will signify coming home or leaving after 36 years. Old dogs learn new tricks but they also don’t forget!

The bar is a gauntlet no matter where you viewed it and the marsh showed the hues reminiscent of winter! Summer is never soon enough and these types of days you hope not to see alot of come shorts time. A howl is a howl and we want that left to the wolves!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When I left, more folks coming in with a spring in their step. The returning vikings were ready to warm up, saddle up, and call it a walk. It says it all lol.

Tap…Tap…ok so not SO bad

I will be honest. The last two seasons have been the busiest in the winter we have had in a while. I am no where to be found. Missed card games (believe me I am no danger but fun to watch go down in flames), lunches, and the time my boots get a workout hiking are missing. When my crews board us in the summer and tell me they have zero time and this is their break; I hear you! I am right there with you! Life happens and you better run Forrest!

Boats continue the search on bluefins, shrimpers are still putting some in the freezer (wow, how about it?), and hunters go in and out of the blinds. I would LIKE to complain about the pace but we get to live here. Great restaurants, good seafood (demand local), empty beaches in the winter that lend to a walk with man’s best friend. As much as seasonal businesses are such; we cannot imagine full time somewhere else.

I am working on some things for you all and as we see changes marina side I will post it here. I have friends who have been on hiatus and we are hoping to see you back on the job shortly-indefinitely. You cannot live around the parks and oceans and not see it. Know that we appreciate everything you do.

BOOKINGS: call us at home as the marina is changing hands and calendars there may not be up to date. I am booking here and holding nothing so you can reach us on cell at 252 423 0039. Leave a message plz as telemarketers have been consistent and we want to talk to everyone!

If you are waiting on the next arctic cold front do NOT blame it on Canada. They did not make it (I have a running joke with some clients as they wanted to know why we always call it that as if it were manufactured there). Cheers and here is to a thaw.

Roll on to Roll in

It seems as if I am slower to post here than to click on our other social media. I think it is due to the fact that moments are instant in nature and intricate thoughts are moments strung like Christmas lights.

The winter season means many things to many people. Celebrations around the world carry beyond the New Year to usher in an artic breath of renewal.

Puppy drum and blow toads continue in the surf. Kings made their run in Hatteras and boats will return to the nets and grounds to grind away the winter here. Three days of pretty then three to four of breezes. Welcome to the Outer Banks! No matter where you are resting, climbing, meandering, or passing the time we wish you the best!

I will be posting here as we see the changes coming and that keeps you on the same string as us!

What’s Old is…New Managers Dockside

We have been on a bit of a hiatus of late from posting which is never ever productive. I wanted to wait until I had some clear information and put it on the deck for our customers to see.

New Management has taken the reigns of the marina currently known as Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. We look forward to working with those coming in and are excited to see what may be down the pike! Fishing is not static in nature and what better way to reflect that then with a swish of this aspect.

My customers know we will continue to execute the level of service we are personally known for as the approaching summer looms. You know us, you know our boat and gear, and we look forward to it! You can still book directly with us for the 2019 season.

As things progress, I will keep you posted but for now let us get ready for the nog, light the candles, and enjoy the weathervane switch. If you are in the snow and not boarding, skiing, or sledding then think of the balmy breezes to come. Remember the boats, take a walk on the sandy side, and let the thoughts warm you up!

It’s Fishing & Then Some

Of course it is always about the fishing! Even in the Fall it has been!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This is what we do but know that there is alot here for everyone once you depart the boat. Sunshine is on tap this week until almost next Saturday so this is the slice of heaven with no snow, no ice, no 38F.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Put your sneakers on, walk the beach on the shell hunt and don’t forget that EVERYONE needs some exercise!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I love sneaking out early to get a feel for what is moving when everyone else is sipping on coffee & tea. There is a stillness that is put on like a blanket only to be shrugged off as cars begin to move.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Sometimes you see the norm for nature (is there such a thing? I think not! Look at that Duck in Central Park).
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Other times you can just stop, gawk, enjoy, and drive on. We have nothing open this week and stripers were on tap like last year on the backside. If you had a jig, a lead head you were casting and jigging! Plenty of my neighbors enjoying that these past few weeks.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So settle back, enjoy the week, cast a line in, pick a shell up, and we will have more post November to discuss!

Thanks to those who kept us untied and rang us up! If you are booking into next year please call our cell at 252 423 0039 Cpt Will McPherson

The Man of Steel

I could NOT believe I missed such a kind compliment. Somewhere out there is a person (from Steel Country) who took the time to stop by the dock, speak with Will, and pay me a compliment on some of the eye candy I place here. I remember the steel workers we used to take in the “old days.” Know that I so appreciated what you said. I actually had a class that I was taking ( I know shocker…the old dog so to speak) and my instructor would not have given me a pass had I not sat in the seat.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0776.

Thank you. Truly. I think it is easy for me to sit in my recliner and type away on the random thoughts. People think it must be a chore but it isn’t. For me, folks are sitting at my table across from me. Poor you! Such an ear bender! You should see the book that I have in my head. I need a ghost writer…or a lottery ticket…no wait; a WINNING lottery ticket. ;)

Winter is still pushing around the edges but temperatures continue to be in that sweet spot leaving us along the beaches on good days for blues etc. Backside saw some trout action earlier but we are not available this weekend so good luck to those coming in! I still guard some memories of a warmer place and a nice view; wonder if my hiking boots can travel this year? Maybe a pack and my GoPro/Cannon..wishing. lol
DCIM100GOPROGOPR0944.

Change has turned the weathervane. When the new information is given to us, I will be passing it along so we are all in the same loop. In the meantime if you are here, enjoy the beach, the temps, and the weekend get away!

Thank you to those who have kept us untied
